Our first unit is addition and subtraction to 20. My curriculum, Math Expressions Common Core uses the idea of fact families to teach basic addition and subtraction as well as missing addend and total standards. They call them math mountains so I created this fun little Math Mountain Game. You just have to print the Math Mountains and number cards. You can also use your own number cards if you have them already. Students play in partners and I put the Math Mountain in a sheet protector so students can write with whiteboard markers on them. The first way we play is when one partner chooses two addends and places them at the bottom of the mountain while the other partner figures out the total and writes it on the mountain. Then, once we learn how to find missing addends, one partner chooses a total and an addend, placing them both on the Math Mountain. Then the other partner figures out the missing addend and writes it on the Math Mountain. I allow students to use whiteboards and/or math manipulatives while playing this game. My class loved this game and we've played it 5 times already as part of our Math Workshop rotations. Don't mind the scissors and paper scraps, I'm a mean teacher and made the kids cut out the numbers the first time they played!!
